Welcome to the Camogie section of the Thurles Sarsfields web site

Catriona Skehan Thurles Sarsfields U 16 Captain 2013

Camogie Notes June 10th

U8’s: Our U8’s took part in a Go-Games blitz in the Ragg on 1st June. We had two teams involved. Each team met Kilruane, Nenagh and Boherlahann. Each game proved a contest and the Thurles girls improved as each game progressed. These games are designed to build confidence and for the girls to have fun while learning the dynamics of the game. The girls benefitted from the games and cannot wait for the next ones. Keep up the training and the practise at home.

U10’s: Our U10’s took part in a Go-Game blitz on Saturday the 8th June in the Ragg. We had a considerable number of girls turn up for the blitz and this is very encouraging to see. We met with Nenagh, Fethard and Holycross. The weather was sizzling but we had an early start so avoided the intense heat of midday. The girls performed well and even in the heat they never gave up and never gave in even in the face of pressure at times from the competition. The girls learned lessons and enjoyed the games enormously. It’s essential that all the girls continue to come to training consistently as this is the key to team building and fitness.

U12’s: Our U12’s were in action, on the bank holiday Monday 3rd of June, in the Ragg against Portroe in the replay of the county semi final. The match was a hard fought battle between these evenly matched teams. The teams already had the measure of each other and this added to closeness and intensity of this replay. We were very unfortunate to be without the experience and significant presence of captain Grace Cummins on the pitch due to injury, but she inspired and encouraged her team from the sideline.

Thurles started the game strong with a combination of Katelyn Ruddy and Aisling Dwyer in midfield proving a magically combination by management. Shannon Daly proved formidable in the gaols and made a significant save in the first half when Portroe forwards eventfully snuck through our backline. Aoife Gleeson and Marie Creedon had frees in the first half and were unlucky not to put them over the post. The powerhouse that is Marie Creedon made some great clearances towards the end of the first half sending them to mid field where one was converted skilfully to a beautiful goal by Amie Nolan.

Portroe started strong in the second half. Lorna Hayes and Roisín Ryan never gave up and stuck to their woman, marking well. Shannon Daly made some crucial saves in the second half again. Portroe got some frees but failed to convert. Thurles responded well and put the pressure back on. Kayleigh Fogarty and Danielle Nevin had some great series of play and hounded their woman never giving up. Amie Nolan was replaced by Shauna Durack who picked up where Amy left off, putting them under pressure. Emma Harrris and Kaci Kerwick breathed new life into the Thurles team but towards the end of the second half the Portroe forwards broke though our tough defences and scored a goal. This ended the game with a draw.

Extra time was added. Both teams came out with victory on their minds. Katelyn Ruddy gave Portroe midfielders a hard time snapping at their heels and they couldn’t catch the consistently outstanding Aisling Dwyer. Marie Creedon, in the backs, cleared the ball with ease, was outstanding and proved a’ thorn’ in Portroes side. Thurles gave it everything and Shannon Daly made two great saves with the ball coming quickly at her twice. Unfortunately we conceded a gaol in extra time. Aoife Gleeson responded almost immediately with a magnificent point from well out on the full time whistle. The oppressive heat took its tool and the Thurles girls never gave up but regrettably it was Portroe’s day, finishing Thurles 1-1, Portroe 2-0. We would like to thank the management team of Paul Fahy, Liz Nevin and Ciara Durack.

Thurles Sarsfields Under 16 Camogie Team Co Champions May 2013

Camogie Notes May 20th

U8&10’s: Training was called off due to the number of our girls who were making their First Holy Communion last Saturday. We hope all of our girls had a great day and we hope to see all of you back to training this Saturday.

U12’s: Our U12’s are in action Tuesday 21st May in the semi final of the league against Portroe in the Ragg. This was the next step in our hard fought but rewarding league journey. Our last match of the league group stage, which saw us come out on top of the table, was against Roscrea and turned out to be another strong performance for the U12’s. Final score was Thurles 3-2 and Roscrea 2-1. Please come out to support the girls and their management team on Tuesday. ‘Sars Abú’

U16’s: Under 16 County Final. Last Tuesday 14th May our Under 16 camogie team created little a bit of history when they became the first team, from the recently formed Thurles Sarsfield Camogie club, to win a county final. Going into this match as underdogs, against a fancied Cashel side who had comfortably beaten Sarsfields in the preliminary round of the competition, Sarsfields had 3 points on the score board before Cashel knew what hit them. Cashel came roaring back into the game in the second quarter and went in at half time leading 1-2 to 0-4. The Thurles Selectors must have had harsh words with their players at half time, because straight from the throw in Sarsfields then took control of the match. Sarsfields management pulled a master stroke by moving Nicola Loughnane from full forward to mid field.

With Nicola Loughnane and Ciara Cummins dominating mid field and both scoring long range points our forwards sprang into life. Two goals and 3 points from centre forward Karen Kennedy along with points from Sarah McKevitt put Sarsfields in the driving seat. Cashel only managed one score in the second half. Bríd Ann Tierney was rock solid in the goals. Our full back line of Norah Kennedy, Katie Cahill and Kate Tierney were making life difficult for Cashel’s full forwards and our half backs of Aoife Butler and Sarah Stakelum haunting the Cashel wing forwards. Our captain Caitriona Skehan really lead from the front, putting herself on the line on a number of occasion’s while clearing ball after ball. Robyn Moore had the Cashel defence bewildered with her darting solo runs and the only way they could stop her was to concede frees which Karen Kennedy gratefully converted. Karen scored 2-5 in total from play and frees and along with her many hooks and blocks and her huge work rate she surely deserves “(Wo) Man of The Match”.Cashel had no answer to our wing wizard Sarah McKevitt whose penetrating runs and point taking were a joy to watch. The old saying that your “full forward line is your first line of defence” was never truer than on Tuesday evening. Jenny McCormack, Rebecca Loughman Twomey and Amy Kennedy fought like tigers to stop any clearances by the Cashel backs. With 5 minutes to go and Cashel pushing hard, super sub Kirsten Harris pulled first time on an incoming sliotar to rattle the Cashel net and put Thurles Sarsfields out of sight of Cashel.

Congratulations to the management team of Lenny Philips, Liz Nevin, Louise Lanigan and Bernie O’Dowd.

We were forced to line out without the injured Katie Taylor and Marie Creedon but had Bridin Murphy back from injury to strengthen our defence .Although we lost this game it was our best performance this year so far. The girls showed some real fight in this game and never gave up. Brid Ann Tierney really played the captains part and had a great game in the goals. Jennifer O’Mara and Emma O’Dwyer were outstanding in defence with some great tackling. Shauna Jordan and Niamh Kennedy worked tirelessly in the mid field. In the attack Sabhbh Leahy ran herself into the ground and Martina Kennedy finished her goal with clinical style. Unfortunately we lost our last game and will start our league in a few months. Keep up the training

Camogie Notes 11/04/2013

U12 had a Go game blitz in Boherlann in Saturday 30th March. It was a bitterly cold day but the cold didn’t deter the girls from playing well once on the pitch. Moycarkey was our first match and we were well matched. Goal scores came from Aoife Gleeson and Aisling O’Dwyer with great play from the rest of the team. Next match was against Boherlann which was a tough one but a brilliant goal from Aoife Gleeson lifted the teams spirits and pulled us right back into the game. A tough second half against the breeze produced little scores. It was great day out for the girls and supporters.

Saturday 6th April we travelled to Carrick on Suir, to Carrick Swans grounds. Carrick Swans, Brian Boru , New Inn and ourselves battled it out on the day. We played three games and won all three. The girls played really well as a team with great goals scored in all games. As always all the girls who travelled the distance to Carrick on Suir got to play. We had some newcomers to U12 and the played really well. Some newcomers to the club also played brilliant with Shannon Daly making some great saves in goals. After the matches, soup sandwichws and refreshments  were laid on by the Carrick Swans community in their clubhouse.  As always a huge thank you to all the parents who help out with lifts and support.

U12 first league match is on Saturday 13th April against Borrisoleigh in Borrisoleigh. Times will be texted to all players. We urge all parents if possible to support their daughter and make the trip.

U14’s were in action on Tuesday 2nd April. Annacarthy proved a challenging  team on the day and a tough match was had. Both teams played well but Annacarthy came out on top at the final whistle. The girls enjoyed the match and lessons have been learned. Our next match was on Tuesday 9th April against Kilruanne followed by another on Tuesday 16th against KIldangan in Kildangan. The best of luck to all involved on the day and we ask parents and friends turn out to support them.

Our Juniors are out against Silvermines on Sunday 14th in the Silvermines. Best of luck to them and all support would be welcomed by the girls, trainers and mentors.
